Meet the Midwest Automotive Team

The Midwest Automotive team is made up of photographers and journalists who share a passion for capturing car culture. Each photographer brings their own skills and vision to their work. From stanced imports to track prepped monsters, from restored classics to garage built street cars, each individual contributes work that they feel is worthy of capturing. The only requirements are high quality photographs, writing, and a passion for your subject

Andrew Smith: Editor in Chief

I am an automotive enthusiast first, and a photographer second. What started as a passion for photographing my own cars, quickly turned into a desire to share others’ stories. The time, money, and passion that goes into modifying an automobile is something unique to the individual. It represents what their beliefs are. It showcases their skills. It allows them to express themselves within their environment. Photographing someone’s car gives me the opportunity to showcase it to the world. Writing about it gives me the opportunity to showcase them to the world. Through a combination of photographs and the written word, the joy people get from seeing their pride and joy showcased is what keeps me looking for the next subject.

I am a car enthusiast through and through but unlike some of the other editors for The Midwest Automotive my introduction to vehicles didn’t start until high-school. I went to Grafton High School where we had an outstanding Auto’s department; that’s where I fell in love with cars. I also became friends with a couple people that had cameras and I decided to merge the two and get a camera myself. Aside from just working on cars, I enjoy the company and community that cars bring; notice that my contributions usually include owners with their vehicles. I look forward to offering a different perspective here at Midwest Automotive.

I was introduced to cars at a very early age.  My father was a diesel mechanic and had a couple dirt track cars as I was growing up.  Every summer weekend was spent in the garage with my father and brother watching and learning the ins and outs of cars.  Eventually I picked up a camera, although a bit later than most.  Focusing first on the basics and portraits, I transitioned into combining my two passions of cars and photography.  I believe in telling the story of how something came to be, both through words and photographs and hope to bring that to Midwest Automotive.

I’ve always been an enthusiast when it comes to cars. It started with GM F-bodies and eventually grew into a love of all things fast. I’ve owned everything from an LS1 Formula to my current GTI and just about everything in between in various states of modification. I dabbled in drag racing and have been taking the GTI out to local autocross events for a couple of years now. I think of automotive photography the same way I think of writing about cars: it’s not just about showing you what the car looks like, it’s about the relationship between the owner and the car. Every build has a story and Midwest Automotive is here to bring those stories to light.
