Gridlife Ice Battle 2019

I am trying to catch up on posting some old shoots from this year. As I am sitting here mid August writing this article, I may still be literally frozen from this shoot.  This was from back on January 26th, 2019 just outside of Stevens Point, WI. As I walked out onto the ice that morning, the temperature was -9* Fahrenheit. Yes, NEGATIVE 9 degrees. That’s without the wind chill. Multiple layers of wool socks, hand warmers in the pockets, and a full facemask wasn’t enough to keep out the cold. It was a constant struggle to spend time in the car warming up and getting out to shoot.

While there was a little bit of variety, the event was dominated by Subarus. Not surprising, as they typically did really well.

I liked the roof box on this Audi.

This little Golf was absolutely flying.

Perfect timing.

While it obviously slowed drivers down, I appreciated the massive snow clouds occurring when they drifted wide and hit the banks of the track. It added some drama to otherwise almost pure white images.

2019 – The Year of photographing Photographers started out strong with this image. Since then I have been slacking.

Don’t mind the hair that was on the sensor. Thats what you get for borrowing a body and not making sure it is clean before shooting…

I am a big fan of the blob eye STI’s, but I think this is my favorite body style of Subarus. They just make me think of the good old days of true rally.

I ended up shooting for a few hours before the cold was just too unbearable. I decided it wasn’t worth it to stay around any longer so I headed home on the 2 hour drive.

We will see what the weather is like this upcoming winter, but unless it is a bit warmer I’m not sure I will be making this trip again. It was unbearably cold and really made for a tough time enjoying shooting. But I am saying this during the middle of summer having just shot within the last few days. By the time the next Gridlife Ice Battle starts, it will have been a long winter of not shooting. The urge to shoot will probably overcome any common sense, and I will find myself back out there in sub-zero weather shooting some cars driving around in circles on the ice.
